Detailed Description

This exceptional cabinet specimen features a stunning natural druzy pocket filled with forest green apophyllite crystals. Thousands of tiny crystal faces catch and scatter light, creating an incredible glittering effect reminiscent of a night sky or deep forest canopy.

Unlike the more common clear apophyllite crystals, green apophyllite is considerably rarer and especially prized by collectors for its vibrant coloration. The green coloration is believed to result from trace mineral inclusions such as vanadium or chromium within the crystal structure.

The microcrystalline druzy formation creates a mesmerizing natural texture across the interior of the cavity, giving the specimen a dramatic depth and visual intrigue that changes with lighting conditions.

This piece is a perfect example of why the Deccan Traps are regarded as one of the most important mineral-producing regions in the world.

Locality

Deccan Traps

Maharashtra, India

The Deccan Traps are one of the largest volcanic provinces on Earth, covering roughly 500,000 square kilometers of western India.

Geological Formation

The Deccan Traps formed approximately 66 million years ago through massive flood basalt eruptions at the end of the Cretaceous period.

As the basalt lava cooled, gas bubbles became trapped in the rock forming cavities called vesicles. Over millions of years, mineral-rich groundwater circulated through fractures in the basalt, depositing minerals such as apophyllite, calcite, quartz, and various zeolites inside these cavities.

These cavities eventually crystallized into the stunning mineral pockets that collectors treasure today.

Mineralogy Information

Apophyllite is a hydrated potassium calcium silicate mineral belonging to the phyllosilicate class.

Chemical Formula:

KCa₄Si₈O₂₀(F,OH)·8H₂O

Typical crystal characteristics include:

 • Tetragonal crystal system

• Perfect basal cleavage

• Glassy to pearly luster

• Prismatic or pyramidal crystal forms

Though technically not a zeolite mineral, apophyllite commonly forms alongside zeolite minerals within basalt cavities, which is why collectors often group them together.

Key Features

• Rare forest green coloration

• Natural druzy crystal cavern formation

• Sparkling micro-crystal texture

• Classic Deccan Trap mineral locality

• Highly aesthetic mineral cabinet specimen

• Exceptional contrast and depth

Geological Era

Late Cretaceous to Early Paleogene

Approximately 66 million years ago

Mineral Class

Phyllosilicates

Rock Formation

Amygdaloidal Basalt (Vesicular basalt filled with secondary mineralization)

Historical or Folklore Notes

Unlike gemstones that have centuries of historical use, green apophyllite gained recognition primarily through modern mineral collecting. As Indian basalt quarries expanded in the 20th century, incredible apophyllite specimens began entering the global mineral market and quickly became favorites among collectors.

Many world-class museum collections today feature specimens from the Deccan Traps due to their extraordinary crystal quality and diversity.

Why Collectors Love It

Collectors prize green apophyllite specimens for several reasons:

• Rare coloration compared to clear apophyllite

• Exceptional crystal sparkle and reflective faces

• Famous world-class mineral locality

• Association with the famous Indian zeolite mineral suite

• Highly photogenic display specimen

Pieces like this represent a perfect combination of geology, rarity, and aesthetic beauty.

Display and Care Instructions

• Display away from prolonged direct sunlight

• Handle gently — apophyllite has perfect cleavage

• Avoid acidic cleaners or ultrasonic cleaning

• Use a soft brush or compressed air to remove dust

• Display under LED lighting to maximize sparkle

A Metaphysical Nod

While metaphysical interpretations are belief-based and not scientifically verified, apophyllite has long been appreciated within crystal traditions for its calming and spiritually uplifting energy.

Green apophyllite is often associated with:

• Heart chakra activation

• Emotional healing

• Inner clarity and insight

• Energetic purification of spaces

Many people place apophyllite crystals in meditation rooms or personal spaces where they want to cultivate tranquility and clarity.

Suggested mantra:

“I welcome clarity, peace, and harmony into my life.”
