Detailed Product Description

Few minerals capture attention as quickly as Cobaltian Calcite, often called Cobalt Calcite or Aphrodite Stone. This Moroccan specimen glows with rich pink tones that range from soft rose to intense magenta depending on cobalt concentration within the calcite crystal structure.

The crystals form delicate clusters across the matrix, reflecting light with a subtle sparkle that gives the specimen a jewel-like appearance. These pieces often display beautiful micro-crystals or scalenohedral formations that create texture and depth.

Morocco is widely recognized as the world’s most famous locality for cobalt-rich calcite specimens. The region’s mines periodically produce pockets containing spectacular pink crystal aggregates that immediately attract mineral collectors worldwide.

Because of their unique color, aesthetic crystal growth, and limited occurrence, Moroccan cobaltian calcites are highly collectible cabinet specimens that stand out in any mineral display.

Locality

Bou Azzer Mining District

Drâa-Tafilalet Region

Anti-Atlas Mountains

Morocco

The Bou Azzer district is one of the world’s most important cobalt mining regions and has produced numerous rare cobalt minerals along with exceptional calcite varieties.

Geological Formation

Cobaltian calcite forms in hydrothermal cobalt-nickel ore veins associated with serpentinite bodies and carbonate host rocks within the Bou Azzer district. Mineralization occurs where hydrothermal fluids deposit cobalt-bearing minerals along fractures and veins within the rock formations.

Over time, cobalt ions substitute into the calcite structure during crystallization, giving the mineral its distinctive pink coloration.

Mineralogy Information

Cobaltian calcite is a variety of calcite where cobalt replaces some calcium in the crystal lattice. The presence of cobalt ions is responsible for the mineral’s distinctive pink color.

Typical associated minerals may include:

• Erythrite

• Roselite

• Skutterudite

• Spherocobaltite

• Quartz

• Dolomite

These minerals commonly occur together in cobalt-rich hydrothermal deposits.

Key Features

• Intense pink coloration caused by cobalt substitution

• Sparkling crystal clusters with high aesthetic appeal

• Classic Moroccan cobalt mineral locality

• Rare collector variety of calcite

• Excellent display specimen for mineral collections

Geological Era

The cobalt deposits of Morocco’s Bou Azzer district are associated with Neoproterozoic geological formations, part of the ancient rocks formed during the assembly and breakup of early supercontinents.

Mineral Class

Carbonates

Calcite belongs to the carbonate mineral class and is one of the most common carbonate minerals found worldwide.

Rock Formation

Cobaltian calcite forms within hydrothermal vein systems hosted by serpentinite and volcanic-sedimentary rocks in the Anti-Atlas region of Morocco. These veins formed when mineral-rich fluids moved through fractures in the rock and deposited cobalt and carbonate minerals.

Historical & Folklore Notes

The Bou Azzer mining district has been exploited for cobalt since the early 20th century and remains one of the most important cobalt deposits globally. Mineral collectors began recognizing the exceptional beauty of the region’s pink calcites during the late 20th and early 21st centuries when particularly vibrant specimens started entering the collector market.

Because of its striking pink color, cobalt calcite has sometimes been referred to in metaphysical circles as “Aphrodite Stone,” symbolizing compassion, love, and emotional healing.

Why Collectors Love It

• Unique vivid pink coloration rarely seen in natural minerals

• Famous Moroccan mineral locality

• Attractive micro-crystal formations

• Highly aesthetic cabinet display specimen

• Increasingly desirable among mineral collectors

Display and Care Instructions

To preserve the beauty of your specimen:

• Display in a stable cabinet or mineral display case

• Avoid direct prolonged sunlight which may dull color

• Handle gently—calcite has relatively low hardness

• Clean only with soft brushes or compressed air

• Avoid acidic cleaners (calcite reacts with acids)

A Metaphysical Nod

While scientific value always comes first at Wandering Stones, many collectors enjoy the symbolic energy associated with minerals.

Pink Cobaltian Calcite is often associated with emotional healing, compassion, and heart-centered awareness. The gentle pink color has long been connected to themes of love and empathy.

Common metaphysical associations include:

 Chakras

• Heart Chakra

Believed energetic properties

• Encouraging emotional balance

• Promoting compassion and empathy

• Supporting inner healing and self-acceptance

Suggested Mantra

“I open my heart to compassion, healing, and love.”

These perspectives are spiritual traditions rather than scientific claims, but many collectors enjoy reflecting on them while working with crystals.
