This striking cabinet specimen showcases delicate snow-white radiating clusters of mordenite growing inside a chalcedony-lined cavity, accompanied by a crystal of optical calcite. The soft fibrous zeolite sprays contrast beautifully against the smooth chalcedony host, creating a sculptural and highly collectible display piece typical of the famous Deccan Traps zeolite pockets of India.

The specimen captures the classic mineral association collectors seek: zeolite sprays, silica mineralization, and crystal clarity within volcanic basalt cavities.

Highlights

  • Radiating mordenite zeolite clusters forming floral “burst” patterns
  • Associated optical calcite crystal with classic double-refraction properties
  • Chalcedony-lined basalt cavity from the Deccan volcanic province
  • Exceptional contrast between delicate fibrous crystals and smooth silica matrix
  • Classic Indian zeolite association specimen prized by collectors
  • Cabinet-size display specimen ideal for mineral collections or gallery display

More Detailed Description

This elegant specimen displays the delicate beauty of mordenite zeolite crystals forming spherical radiating aggregates inside a chalcedony-lined cavity. These delicate sprays resemble miniature sea urchins or snowflakes, a hallmark habit of mordenite from the volcanic pockets of western India.

The specimen is accented by a well-formed crystal of optical calcite, sometimes called Iceland spar. When light passes through optical calcite, it splits into two rays producing a doubled image — a phenomenon known as birefringence or double refraction.

This combination of fibrous zeolite, silica mineralization, and calcite crystallization is typical of the famous zeolite pockets found within basalt flows of the Deccan Traps, one of the world’s most prolific localities for aesthetic mineral specimens.

Locality

Deccan Traps Volcanic Province

Maharashtra, India

Geological Formation

The Deccan Traps represent one of the largest volcanic flood basalt provinces on Earth. After lava flows cooled, gas bubbles and cavities formed within the basalt. These spaces later filled with mineral-rich hydrothermal fluids that deposited secondary minerals such as zeolites, chalcedony, quartz, and calcite.

Over time, minerals crystallized layer by layer within these cavities, creating the stunning pocket specimens for which the region is globally famous.

Mordenite commonly forms as radiating fibrous aggregates within these basalt cavities, often lining the walls of vesicles in volcanic rock.

Mineralogy Information

Mordenite

  • Mineral Class: Tectosilicate (Zeolite group)
  • Crystal System: Orthorhombic
  • Habit: Fibrous, radiating sprays, delicate hairlike crystals
  • Chemical Structure: Framework silicate with aluminum substitution
  • Common in altered volcanic rocks such as basalt.

Optical Calcite

  • Chemical Composition: Calcium Carbonate (CaCO₃)
  • Known for extremely strong double refraction of light.

Chalcedony

  • Microcrystalline quartz forming smooth linings inside volcanic cavities.

Key Features

  • Exceptional radiating mordenite crystal clusters
  • Rare combination of zeolite + calcite + chalcedony
  • Textural contrast between fibrous crystals and smooth silica
  • Classic Deccan Traps pocket mineralization
  • Elegant natural mineral sculpture

Geological Era

Late Cretaceous – Early Paleogene

Approximately 66 million years old

Mineral Class

  • Mordenite: Tectosilicate (Zeolite Group)
  • Calcite: Carbonate Mineral
  • Chalcedony: Silicate (Quartz Variety)

Rock Formation

Basaltic volcanic rock from the Deccan flood basalts, formed by massive lava eruptions that covered much of western India.

Historical & Folklore Notes

Optical calcite has a fascinating place in scientific history. Clear calcite crystals historically called “Iceland spar” were used to demonstrate the phenomenon of light polarization and double refraction.

Some historians believe Viking navigators may have used these crystals as a “sunstone” to determine the sun’s direction even through heavy clouds or fog.

Meanwhile, zeolite minerals from the Deccan Traps have been collected and studied for over a century and are considered some of the finest aesthetic zeolite specimens in the world.

Why Collectors Love It

A Metaphysical Nod

Many crystal enthusiasts associate mordenite and optical calcite with clarity, insight, and expanded perception. Optical calcite in particular is often said to symbolize the ability to see multiple perspectives and reveal hidden truths, reflecting its physical property of splitting light into two rays.

Common metaphysical associations include:

  • Mental clarity and expanded awareness
  • Enhancing perception and understanding
  • Amplifying intention during meditation

Associated Chakras

  • Crown Chakra
  • Third Eye Chakra

Suggested Mantra

“I see truth clearly and embrace new perspectives.”

(Metaphysical properties are belief-based traditions and not scientifically proven.)

Why Trust Wandering Stones

At Wandering Stones, we specialize in authentic mineral specimens sourced directly from trusted miners and partners around the world. Every specimen is carefully selected for geological interest, natural beauty, and collector appeal.

We believe minerals tell the story of Earth’s deep history — and our mission is to share those stories through specimens ranging from the common to the truly extraordinary.
