Geological Formation
Most terrestrial peridot begins deep within Earth’s upper mantle. In these high-temperature environments, magnesium, iron, oxygen, and silicon combine to form olivine. Peridot generally represents a magnesium-rich portion of the olivine solid-solution series between forsterite, Mg₂SiO₄, and fayalite, Fe₂SiO₄.
Some peridot remains enclosed within mantle rocks such as peridotite, dunite, and lherzolite. During volcanic activity, magma can tear pieces of these mantle rocks from depth and carry them toward the surface. These fragments, called xenoliths, may become trapped inside basalt as the lava cools. Once the basalt weathers or is mined, gem-quality olivine crystals can be recovered from the host rock.
Other deposits form where olivine-rich ultramafic rocks are uplifted, fractured, altered, or incorporated into mountain belts. In localities such as Myanmar and Pakistan, larger crystals may occur in veins, pockets, or altered dunite and peridotite rather than simply as small grains inside basalt.
Peridot can also have an extraterrestrial origin. Some pallasite meteorites contain translucent olivine crystals suspended within an iron-nickel matrix. A small number of these crystals are sufficiently clear and intact to be faceted into extremely rare extraterrestrial peridot gemstones.

Peridot belongs to the olivine group, a solid-solution series dominated by two mineral end members:

Commercial-quality peridot in smaller calibrated sizes is readily available and can be affordable. Transparent stones with attractive yellow-green color are also relatively accessible in jewelry.

One of the oldest known sources was Zabargad Island in the Red Sea. Ancient Egyptians mined green gemstones there and reportedly called peridot the Gem of the Sun. According to legend, the island was once so heavily populated by snakes that mining became dangerous until a pharaoh ordered the snakes driven into the sea.
Ancient beliefs connected peridot with sunlight and protection. Some people believed that it guarded its owner against nightmares, nighttime terrors, enchantments, and harmful spirits—especially when set in gold. Examine the color: Peridot should remain within a yellow-green, grass-green, olive-green, or brown-green range. A stone marketed as blue peridot, purple peridot, red peridot, or vivid emerald-blue peridot is incorrectly identified or artificially labeled.
Be cautious with perfect uniformity: Perfectly identical beads with the exact same color, transparency, and internal appearance may warrant closer inspection. Natural bead strands normally show at least subtle variation.
Consider the price and size: Small commercial peridot can be affordable, so a low price is not automatically proof of imitation. However, a very large, flawless, richly saturated grass-green gemstone offered at an unusually low price should be independently tested.
Ask about treatment: Peridot is usually untreated, and heating is not a standard method of improving its color. Vague claims about “enhanced,” “stabilized,” or “heated” peridot should be explained clearly by the seller.
Request professional testing for valuable stones: Refractive-index testing, birefringence, specific gravity, spectroscopy, and microscopic examination provide far more dependable identification than appearance alone.
