Menalite should not be confused with Menilite, despite the nearly identical spelling. Menilite is a grayish-brown variety of opal associated with siliceous or diatom-rich sediments. How It’s Formed
Imagine a lake or shallow body of water with a bottom made from very soft mud. Tiny grains of clay and sand settle into that mud, layer by layer.
Now imagine water moving through the mud. The water carries invisible dissolved minerals, including calcium carbonate—the same basic material found in calcite and many seashells.
When conditions are just right, the calcium carbonate begins sticking the tiny grains of mud together. It may start around a little pebble, shell fragment, plant remnant, organic particle, or simply one special spot where the chemistry is different.

The rounded calcium-carbonate concretions found around the Harricana River in Quebec are traditionally called Fairy Stones or pierres de fée. Many have flattened, biscuit-like shapes, while others display raised patterns, rings, grooves, or clusters on their surfaces.
One interpretation of the Harricana River’s name connects it with Indigenous words referring to biscuits or biscuit-shaped stones found along the river. Historical accounts and regional traditions also describe these unusual concretions as objects carried for luck, protection, or success during hunting and fishing. Because histories recorded by outside writers do not always preserve the full meaning of Indigenous traditions, these stories are best shared respectfully as regional traditions rather than treated as one universal account.
