Commercial quantities of gem-quality tanzanite are associated with one remarkably restricted locality:

The mining region lies southeast of Arusha and near Mount Kilimanjaro. It has historically been divided into Blocks A, B, C, and D, along with additional mining areas and extensions.

Geological Formation

Tanzanite formed through a complex combination of regional metamorphism, folding, deformation, chemical alteration, and mineral-rich geological fluids.

The Merelani deposit lies within the Mozambique Belt, a vast metamorphic zone associated with ancient continental collision during the Pan-African mountain-building events. In this region, older sedimentary and carbonate-rich materials were buried, compressed, heated, folded, and chemically transformed.

The tanzanite-bearing environment contains metamorphosed carbonate and silicate rocks, including graphitic gneiss, marble, quartz-rich zones, and altered metamorphic layers. These rocks experienced intense temperatures and pressures during multiple episodes of regional metamorphism and deformation.

Trace elements—particularly vanadium—were present in the original sedimentary materials or chemically mobilized during metamorphism and alteration. Under a very specific combination of temperature, pressure, host-rock chemistry, deformation, and available fluids, vanadium became incorporated into growing zoisite crystals.

Later structural movement opened fractures, folds, shear zones, and mineralized pathways where zoisite and associated minerals could crystallize. The unusual convergence of all these geological conditions is believed to explain why gem-quality tanzanite has not been discovered in comparable commercial deposits elsewhere.

Mineralogy Information

Tanzanite is not a separate mineral species. It is the blue-to-violet gem variety of zoisite.

Zoisite is a sorosilicate mineral within the epidote group. Sorosilicates contain paired silicate tetrahedra, and zoisite’s structure also contains calcium, aluminum, oxygen, and hydroxyl.

The blue, violet, and purple coloration of tanzanite is primarily linked to small amounts of vanadium within the crystal structure. Differences in the oxidation state and optical absorption of vanadium help produce the gemstone’s distinctive colors.

Tanzanite is strongly pleochroic. In suitable material, different crystallographic directions may show blue, violet, purple, greenish, yellowish, or brownish colors. Untreated crystals may be described as trichroic because they can display three different colors along three optical directions.

Pleochroism

Tanzanite can display different colors when viewed from different directions. One orientation may appear predominantly blue, while another looks violet or purple. This is one of the most important identifying and aesthetic features of the gemstone.

Color Zoning

Some crystals show uneven distribution of color. Skilled cutting can minimize distracting zoning or intentionally use it to create an unusual visual effect.

Strong Relationship Between Cut and Color

A cutter must decide how to orient the rough before faceting it. One cutting direction may produce a stronger blue face-up color but sacrifice more weight. Another may retain more material while emphasizing violet or purple.

This is why two tanzanites cut from similar rough can have very different final colors, proportions, and values.

Major deformation in the region occurred hundreds of millions of years ago as continental masses collided during the assembly of Gondwana. Geological studies describe important high-grade deformation around approximately 640 million years ago, followed by later folding and metamorphic alteration around roughly 600–560 million years ago. 

This places the development of the tanzanite-bearing geological environment near the end of the Precambrian, during the Ediacaran Period.

Rather than forming in a single simple event, the deposit likely reflects several overlapping stages of sedimentation, burial, regional metamorphism, folding, fluid activity, chemical exchange, and crystal growth.

Level of Rarity

Tanzanite is considered a rare gemstone because its gem-quality material comes from one extremely limited geographic region.

The word “rare” should still be used thoughtfully. Tanzanite is commercially available and can be found in many jewelry stores, gem shows, and mineral collections. Its availability does not mean it is geologically common. It means an active mining and international gemstone industry has made material from one deposit widely distributed.

Fine-quality tanzanite is considerably less common than commercial-grade material. The rarest examples may combine:

One frequently repeated legend says that lightning or a brush fire heated brown zoisite crystals near the surface, transforming them into blue stones that were later noticed by Maasai herders. How to Spot a Fake

Tanzanite can be imitated by glass, synthetic materials, coated stones, assembled gems, dyed materials, or other naturally blue and violet gemstones.

There is no reliable single visual test for every imitation. A professional gemological examination is the best way to confirm valuable material.

Look for pleochroism

Natural tanzanite usually shows noticeable shifts between blue, violet, and purple when viewed from different directions. Some untreated stones may show additional brownish, yellowish, or greenish components.

An imitation that remains exactly the same color from every angle deserves closer examination. However, visible color change alone does not prove authenticity.

Examine the color carefully
